Cleaning’s a breeze

uPVC window frames are known for their low maintenance requirements. They typically only need cleaning every few months, depending on your location. With our weather-resistant and high-quality windows and doors, keeping them clean is a breeze.

  • Remove dust and dirt – open the windows and use an old paintbrush to loosen dust/debris, then vacuum.
  • Wipe down – Prepare a mixture of warm water and dishwashing liquid in a bowl. Use a soft cloth to wipe down the window frames, paying extra attention to the edges.
  • Get tough on dirt –  For stubborn dirt, consider using a mild cream surface cleaner or in extreme cases a solvent based uPVC cleaner. These can be found at your local hardware store or contact NK Windows. It is very important with these two options that any cream or solvent residue is removed with warm water after cleaning.

The difference is clear

Aim to clean your glass four to eight times a year using non-chemical solutions. Traditional glass cleaners and specialised e-cloths designed for cleaning glass work best in this case. 

  • Timing – Choose a day when the windows are not exposed to direct sunlight. Cleaning on a cloudy day helps prevent streaks caused by rapid drying.
  • Remove dirt – Begin by using a damp cloth to remove excess dirt from the glass.
  • Glass cleaner –  Apply a non-chemical glass cleaner directly onto the glass and work it into all corners using a microfibre cloth.
  • Drying –  Use a drying cloth to polish the glass to perfection, ensuring a crystal-clear finish.

Inspecting and maintaining locks

To ensure the functionality and security of your double-glazed windows and doors, you should  periodically check the locks and keep them free from dirt and grime. 

  • Examination – Unlock and open each window and door to examine the locks. Ensure they are working properly and clean any accumulated dirt.
  • Lubricate – Apply an acid free lubricant such as petroleum jelly or a light clear machine oil on the locking strip while the windows are open. Wipe away any excess lubricant with a cleaning towel.

Lubricating hinges and handles

Proper lubrication of hinges and handles maintains the functionality and appearance of your windows and doors.

  • Lubricate locks – Close window or door before applying lubricant oil to the handles. Spray a lubricant such as WD-40 or CRC 5-56 onto the key and insert it into the handle lock. Gently wiggle the key in and out of the lock several times.
  • Lubricate hinges – Open the windows and apply lubricant on the friction hinges..
